In 2016, British Youth for Christ were part of a national piece of research, where young people across the UK were asked questions to help us understand youth culture. (You can see the results of this research here).

Unsurprisingly, the results regarding social media were staggering, showing the influence social media has on young people today. So the following year, British Youth for Christ conducted more research to understand more about the relationship young people have with social media (you can see the results here).

Social media can be used for so much good, and yet can also be such a dark place. Along with the ability to connect with people, maintain friendships, share inspirational content and be encouraged, social media is also a place of cyber-bullying, peer pressure, sexting, and unhealthy body image. This is being experienced by our young people on social media on a daily basis.

And yet, social media is only growing and so we believe that youth workers should be a light in this space. We are active on Instagram and TikTok, connecting with young people and creating community content to support them in everyday life. Answering practical questions, addressing common issues, as well as sharing the gospel in creative ways. Not only that, but we make a bit of a fool of ourselves too! Taking part in TikTok trends and silly challenges – we want to be a light on social media and bring joy, hope, and truth to every young person following us.
