“It’s always a privilege to be a part of what God is doing in the lives of young people across Warrington, and often this comes at times and in ways that we don’t expect.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve connected occasionally with a young boy who started at Birchwood High School last year. At the beginning of this academic year, he came along to our after-school club Fresh with a couple of his friends who already came, and he seemed to enjoy playing games, taking part in quizzes, eating far too many sugary treats, and the general social aspects of the club.

However, when it came to the ‘God Spot’ section where a member of the team comes to share about an aspect of faith, he would usually put his headphones in and listen to music, or watch some videos on his phone. At first, whilst this seemed rude, we chose not to challenge him on it, as we didn’t want to discourage him from coming altogether.

Over time, he started listening to music with one earphone, and then he began to wear both earphones but with nothing actually playing through them, and finally over the past few months the earphones have completely disappeared, and he started asking more questions, and engaging with the discussions about faith in a more deep and meaningful way.

God had put on my heart to invite this young man along to the Alpha course we started a few weeks ago, and to my surprise, I had to the opportunity to, but not at Fresh, where he had slowly been engaging more and more with the gospel, but at our FUSE event. He had come along with the same friends who first encouraged him to come to Fresh, and along with them, he responded to the appeal to invite Jesus into his heart at the end of the event.

This genuinely took me by surprise, as I thought he was still a long way from this point, but I praise God that his plans and his timing are perfect, and he outworks them in his own way, even when youth workers are sometimes looking the other way!

Please join with me in thanking God for this young man, and the friends who have been sharing their faith with him in the background the whole time.

“But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”” Matthew 19:14″
